Alfons Carnicero and Míriam Febrer, members of the BIOMEC Lab at the Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CREB), have won, respectively, the Award to the Best Master’s Thesis and a Scholarship for the PhD Thesis given by the Association of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia. These awards were given during the Diada de l’Enginyer 2017. In the photo, you can see the two awardees with the Director of the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB).

Alfons Carnicero, graduate student of the Master in Industrial Engineering (with Biomedical specialization) at ETSEIB, was awarded for his Master’s thesis entitled “Development of a vibrating device to enhance gait in patients with incomplete spinal cord injuries”. This work was carried out at Institut Guttmann Neurorehabilitation Hospital as part of the hospital’s research line on non-invasive stimulation. The objective of the project was to develop a focal vibration device that applies mechanical vibrations to specific muscles to activate the skeletal and neuromuscular systems during walking. More information about this project can be read here.

Míriam Febrer, PhD student of the Lab and teaching assistant at ETSEIB, was awarded for her PhD thesis entitled “Prediction of assisted walking using subject-specific biomechanical models”, supervised by Dr. Josep Maria Font. The thesis aims to develop subject-specific computational models able to predict walking motion of spinal cord injured patients assisted by a robotic exoskeleton. This work will allow to personalize the design and control of such devices based on computer simulation. In February 2018, Míriam will do a research stay at the prestigious group of Dr. B.J. Fregly at Rice University (Houston, USA).

That same day, Dr. Pere Caminal Magrans, former Director of CREB and Full Professor at ETSEIB, received the Academic Career Award. Congratulations Pere, this is a fair and well-deserved award!
